Making a Difference in the South Asian Community through Pro Bono

Please join SABA-DC as we celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month with an engaging panel on recent pro bono cases that have impacted the South Asian community. The issues addressed in these cases include:

  • Breaking barriers that forced Sikh American soldiers to choose between their faith and service to their country.
  • Individuals in military uniform wearing their articles of faith (hijab, turban, beards, etc) which were not permitted by Air Force/Navy/Marine policy.
  • Muslim American comedians exercising their freedom of speech rights in order to promote their movie.
  • South Asian immigrants who enlisted in the U.S. Army through the Military Accessions Vital to National Interest (MAVNI) program being denied their statutory right to expedited naturalization, and discharged by the Army without due process.

The panelists will also discuss nonprofit organizations that serve the South Asian community, the career path of a civil rights attorney, and tips on how to leverage your workload while handling pro bono matters.  Light appetizers and beverages will be served at the event.  We hope to see you there!
