SABA-DC May Dinner Series: From Sea to Shining Sea? Advocating Against Racial Profiling
Please join SABA-DC for its May Dinner Series featuring Sameera Hafiz, Policy Director at the Rights Working Group, a coalition of nearly 300 organizations formed in the aftermath of 9-11 to preserve and protect civil liberties and human rights for all. As law enforcement officials utilize the practice of racial profiling across the country, rights are being curtailed in the everyday facets of life, including work, travel, voting and housing. In Arizona, an appellate court upheld an injunction to block SB 1070, the controversial racial profiling bill that is being backed by the state's governor. In Georgia, the state legislature recently passed a copycat bill to Arizona's SB 1070. But efforts to curb racial profiling are vibrant, including the End Racial Profiling Act introduced to the Congress in July 2010 and in the international arena, the recent U.N. Human Rights Council recommendations to the United States to end its racial profiling practices.Date: Thursday, May 19
